Week 2 - DOF

Depth of Field

What is deep DOF?

A deep depth of field is when the image is fully clear and in focus and a shallow depth of field has one vocal point and the background of the image becomes blurry or unfocused.

What aperture gives you deep DOF?

For a deep depth of field you need to be around f/16.
Metadata: F/5.6   1/400    ISO 400 - This is a shallow D.O.F. I can tell this because the background is out of focus.

Metadata: F/8.0   1/320  ISO 400
Metadata: F/25   1/15   ISO 100 - This is a deep D.O.F everything is quality in focus and has a F-stop of  F/25
Metadata: F/4.0    1/500   ISO 100 - This is a shallow D.O.F more of the focus is on the plant in this picture it is easier to see once enlarged and because the F-stop is f/4.0. This is not a good example unless enlarged.

My focus in these pictures was incorrectly on the bush in front of me instead of the subject so you cant see clearly the depth of field. If I were to try this exercise again I would choose a better area to take my picture and increase the fstop on the second image to get a smaller aperture and a greater depth of field.

Metadata: F/22.0   1/8   ISO 100 - This is a deep depth of field because it has a high F-stop of F/22.0
Metadata: F/9.0    1/50    ISO 100  - This is a shallow D.O.F because it has a low F-stop of F/9.0
